art song

i will wade out, for soprano & piano

Composed and performed during my time at Westminster Choir College, 'i will wade out' explores the notion of awareness and coming alive; becoming present in the body and mind. The speaker begins ‘wading out’ into their sensual feelings in the first cycle, finding themselves by the end in ecstatic bliss. The second movement is a series of Cummings haiku pieces, where the speaker has spiritual grounding in a whirling scene around her. The final movement indicates sensual feelings towards another entity, where she has progressed to finding the sources of love, and can sing of it.

sick roomfor solo soprano & piano.

Also composed at Westminster, 'Sick Room' explores the holistic sensation of isolation; being confined between the four walls of the self, seeing the outside world as a stranger and not a friend. Creating a narrative across these three Langston Hughes texts, I create a character who sings of her desolation, telling her story to the four walls where she is situated. The cycle explores the use of silence, with varying sparks of tension and release throughout, giving an insight into the character and her personality.
